Upper School Dinner Information

July 31, 2018

Hello families!

I am Mandy Renert, CKH’s Upper School Principal, and am so excited for this year’s Upper School - and specifically, the dinners! I will be coordinating this year’s dinners for grades 7-12. Wednesday nights are a busy, social and educational night for these students, and dinners are a bonding experience for the older students! We count on you, the parents, to provide the food for dinner each week, and we set up a schedule so that the responsibility will be shared among all of you. I will be here every Wednesday for support and for whatever else you will need. Each Wednesday, the students begin their Upper School experience in the Cohen Social Hall, where they socialize and share a 30-minute dinner provided by 2-3 families.

  • Dinners take place 6:00-6:30 pm in the Cohen Social Hall. You will need to arrive at 5:30 pm to set up, or earlier, if you need more time. You will also need to clean up after 6:30 pm, as this is when the students go to class, to electives or to a special program. We need to leave the kitchen and the Cohen Social Hall as clean as possible, as we are not the only group that uses these areas during the week. We encourage the students to take responsibility when it comes to caring for our building and to clean up their tables; even so, extra cleaning might be needed.

  • Meals: Our building is kosher style (no dairy and meat in the same meal and no pork or shellfish) and is also nut-free. Please keep these things in mind when you and your coordinating family(ies) plan your meal. Also, be sure to include a vegetarian and gluten free option. Most families choose pizza (sheet pizzas must be ordered in advance, and we typically need 5). Some places deliver. Chinese is also an option, or some families choose to make a pasta dinner themselves. You will also be providing drinks and dessert. If any of your dates are near a holiday, you might choose to serve traditional food for that holiday. Typically, plan to feed 45 people; I will let you know if that number changes.

  • CKH provides paper goods (cups, plates, napkins, forks/knives/spoons) and these are located in the tall kitchen cabinets. Please let me know if any of these products need restocking.

  • Emails: The email list for all of the families who are enrolled for the 2018-2019 school year has been emailed to you, and is also available upon request. Please let me know if there are changes needed. I will be emailing families once a month to remind you who is responsible for the next two months. Please communicate with the other family(ies) about your date and dinner - who is setting up, making or getting the food, cleaning up, paying, etc.

  • What you need to do now:

    • Sign up for 2 dates on the Sign-up Genius (go to link above). If you need a substitute for your dinner date, please switch with someone and let me know so that I can keep track of that as well. Email me at upper.school@kolhaverim.org or call my cell phone (860) 202-8879 with questions.

    • To summarize:

      • Sign up for 2 dates

      • Arrive on time for a prompt set up and clean up

      • Arrange the preparation and delivery of a main course, drinks and dessert

      • Provide enough food for 45 people

      • Coordinate with the partner family(ies)

      • Communicate with me about dinners (as needed)

Looking forward to a great year!

Best,

Mandy Renert
